This was fantastic experience combining some great climbs with travel and time in Iceland. The mix allowed decent recovery time between climbs and also gave time to get familiar with the country and its culture. First class. Jón Yngvi was superb. He had the personality, patience and calmness required to give clients reassurance that they are in good hands. His focus on safety was superb and his deep knowledge of the history and terrain of Iceland made the experience so much more interesting. 10/10. - 2015 climber
Wonderful trip. Well-organized, but with flexibility built in (weather related changes, if necessary). Visited a few well-known sites, then climbed the Iceland volcanos. - 2015 climber
This was a great trip ! in a magical, unspoiled, diverse landscape and is a must for all explorers. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, flexible, accommodating and always smiling. He handled the schedule wonderfully and was able to fit in a rafting tour which we all enjoyed! I would definitely recommend him as a host and mountain guide!
Volcanoes of Iceland - Mountaineering and Hiking
Training on Svínafellsjökull Glacier
Blessed with ravishing natural beauty, Iceland's glaciated volcanoes, towering waterfalls and a verdant sprawling landscape have attracted explorers of the land and mind (famed Arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson and Jules Verne, to name a few) since the days of early Vikings.
After our successful 2012 inaugural trip followed by an superb season in 2013, we added some more challenging climbs and training to the program for our 2014 expedition. Certainly the beauty of Iceland is enough to entice the traveler, but few climbers tackle the local peaks and venture onto the glaciers.
Alpine Ascents' Iceland expedition weaves moderate glaciated climbs with hiking and cultural visits into an enchanting nine-day journey. Climbing skills will be reviewed on our first glacier tour (Snæfellsjökull), making this trip appropriate for experienced and novice climbers alike. All climbs are day climbs, we stay in hotels each night. We will have time to explore the countryside as well as the capital, Reykjavik.
Please see our expansive day to day itinerary.
Mio & Lokey are expert mountaineers and extremely knowledgeable about the all aspects of leading climbing trips. They looked out for our safety and yet pushed us to levels we sought to achieve.
Excellent mountain hiking/climbing trip combined with visiting a ruggedly, beautiful place in the world. Our eleven person group (including the guides) blended well with one another and added to the overall value of the experience.
Climbing Skill Level
Climbers should be in very good to excellent physical condition but do not need prior experience. This is a demanding program in that we may have some long single days (some days are 8 hours hiking and one day can be a long 14 hour days with a 5000 foot elevation gain and loss).
In the best interest of personal safety, success, and team compatibility, adequate training and excellent physical condition are required. Prior experience carrying a pack for multiple days serves as excellent preparation for this climb. Climbers who have done well on such mountains as Rainier can expect to do well. Climbers must be able to carry an average of 20lbs or more and be physically and mentally prepared to deal with strenuous situations at high altitudes. Climbers need to be in very good excellent physical condition for both personal enjoyment and to be an integral team member. Please note novice climbers may find part of the trip demanding, but we will send a detailed training regimen upon signing up. Following this regimen will put you in a good position to enjoy the climbing portions of this trip.
We regularly organize private climbs for corporate groups, families and friends. We encourage you to book these climbs early as we are often able to cater these climbs to group-specific desires. Please contact our office to further discuss the benefits of private climbs.
