There is sunshine, some clouds, but actually out here in bare hands, which is great because this morning it was about 8 degrees below Fahrenheit. So stay tuned for the further adventures of the Belay Anchors, ciao for now. Team II: 12/31/2009 Team II: 12/30/2009 eam II: 12/29/2009 Team II: 12/29/2009 The team enjoyed the briefing with ALE, our flight service. Learning about how harsh yet fragile Antarctica is gives us even more respect for this facinating cold place that we will have to not only survive in but excel if we are to achieve our mission. After the talk we reviewed our gear and discussed techniques on how best to deal with our upcoming challenge. We are really phyched to get airborne and on our way....We can taste it! Team II: 12/28/2009 Vern Tejas here reporting in from the tip of South America. Punta Areanas, Chile is our jumping off point for Alpine Ascents second expedition to Mount Vinson, the highest mountain in Antarctica. All team members and equipment arrived safely today. It looks to be a fine crew. Chris hails from Oz, Wayne from DC and Tom and Mo are from my newly adopted home of NYC. We have been getting to know one another as well as going through our gear to make sure we have what it´ll take to climb to the top of the white continent. The team enjoyed a fine meal as we told our stories and warmed up to our new climbing partners. All of us are looking forward to meeting with our flight service ALE tomorrow and getting our bird loaded and ready for the adventure. Join in and share it with us. To The Summit, 12/12/2009 World Wide Wonders are now on the way home. It is an amzing thing that so many factors aligned just right for this team. We have had fantastic weather, good acclimatization scheduling, fantastic air support, strong team members and great additudes, which has all contributed to this expedition not only being the most efficient but also one of the most enjoyable. Truly remarkable to spend only a week on the "Ice" yet obtain all our objectives, suntans, summit and comeradery extrodinare. We were in basecamp for a mere 17 hours before the Twin Otter buzzed in to fly us back to Patriot Hills where our big Ilyushin jet soon arrived to carry us to Chile. It was an allnighter but we were so elated that most of us didn't want to even think of sleeping. Now our Taiwanese contingent is off to explore Torres del Paine national park while the rest of us are dozing on jets as we head home to enjoy extended holidays with the ones we love. Thank you for following our adventure to white continent, See you next expedition. To The Summit,
Vern Tejas

We waited around most of the day, fingers crossed for good weather and low and behold in the evening we got the call and we were ready. We jumped on the plan and flew all night long, landing here at about 2:30-3:00 in the morning and it is beautiful, the stark remoteness of this place would have you drooling. (…transmission garbled…) sun up of course even at two in the morning and we were able to pitch our tents, after a good hearty meal of stew we hit the sack. We are looking forward to a brand new day on the white continent so come along and join us and you too can go to the top of the bottom of the world.
12/3/2009 Hello friends, family and loved ones,
The team awoke from jet lagged repose to a brilliant day on the tip of South America. I spent the night packing food supplies for our effort on Vinson. We met with our flight service early to discuss logistics of our planned excursion to the land of ice and snow. They have chartered an old Soviet cargo jet to fly us to the "Ice". This afternoon we weighed our equipment and supplies and had them loaded onto the plane, a huge Ilyushin 76. We will fly when the weather conditions permit and presently conditions are near flyable so we are eager. Enjoy the excitement with us as you track our progress.
To The Summit, I hope we can fly soon 12/1/2009 We are excited to be kicking off a new season in Antarctica with a terrific Mount Vinson team. All team members have now arrived in Chile's most Southern city, Punta Arenas. It's a real international crew consisting of John Burns, Wang Chien-Min, Jeff Church, Chen Ko-Ming, Dusan Repak and John Carney with Tim Hewitt and myself guiding. The boys seem fit and a raring to go. We just looked over their gear and a now heading out on the street to find a suitable eatery to welcome everyone to the fair city and to get to know each other. J. Burns arriving early has already made it out to the penguin rookery so hopes run high that he will share his photos with us. And we hope that you will join us often as we share the adventure of climbing the highest mountain on the white continent, Mount Vinson.
Hey there friends, family and loved ones, Vern Tejas reporting for Snow White Team on Vinson. It is looking like the weather has improved enough to get the flight coming towards us so hopefully the weather will hold and we will get on that plane and we will fly back to South America, Punta Arenas tonight with any luck. So keep your fingers crossed and hopefully we will be able to email you and call you soon. Thanks for following along and we will talk to you when we get in PA, ciao for now.
Friends, family and loved ones it is the Whiters calling, it is seven impatient, grumpy, old men, just basically waiting for the plane. People are in good spirits, just waiting for the weather to clear, reading books, playing music, eating lots of food and drinking lots of hot drinks so you can just imagine what the scene is like right here. So stay tuned to the further adventures of the Whiters, ciao for now.
Hello there friends family and loved ones this is Snowhite calling in from Patriot Hills. We had a very fine day of reading, resting, eating and drinking as we wait ever patiently for the big bird, the Iluyshin to show. Everyone is biding their time; a few puzzles have been done, books are being devoured and card are being played and fortunes being lost. The most aggressive our group down to the weather station today on an expedition of great magnitude however almost everyone else stayed here and bided their time. So you do the same and come visit again while we stay here at Patriot Hills, ciao for now.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is Snowhite and the Lost Helpers, we are down in Patriot Hills, the 17th day of the ordeal, please send food. We are looking for a plane to get us out of here but it is not coming yet because it is so snowy and white, that’s our night. Help, anyone else have anything to add (from the team: yay, cheers) okay bye we are getting desperate, I don’t know if you figured that out.
We are actually stuck in some clouds, we won’t be able to fly until things clear up but we are definitely hopeful that the wind dies and the sun comes out so that we can get out of here and come home to you. Everyone is in good shape, good order and just waiting patiently for good weather. Thanks for tuning in; we will keep you abreast of the situation, ciao for now.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is The Snowhites calling in from beautiful downtown Patriot Hills. Yes we did escape, we fretted about it for a while, the weather finally cleared this morning over at base camp and then the Otter came in. We packed furiously, all hands on deck and contributed to the effort and we got the last little bit of packing down just as the airplane came around the corner. We jumped on board, had a lovely frosty flight back into Patriot Hills, this is the big airport down here where hopefully some day soon, the big Ilyushin bird will (…transmission break…) Oh it might be two days or so before we go back. The Ilyushin bird will take us away hopefully back to South America and then soon on to you. So stay tuned so that you can find out what happens to these All Stars, ciao for now, sweet dreams.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones the gloriously successful team on Vinson has now returned to base camp. We had a good sunny day, the winds have dropped and we were able to make our way down to VBC, Vinson base camp at 7,000 ft. The clouds have come in and there is a little bit of fog and doesn’t look like we are going to fly tonight, hopefully it will be tomorrow. Everyone is feeling much better with the increased oxygen and the warmer temperatures down here and we made really good time. The team is thinking of you and thanks for thinking of us, sweet dreams.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is Snow White and the Super Heroes calling in from high camp on the flanks of Mt. Vinson, the highest mountain in Antarctica. Oh boy what a day; we did summit but it was atrocious up there, very windy but the views were excellent and we were able to see for miles and miles. You are probably wondering if we got back safely, we did however there are a couple of statistics that we need to share with you; it was minus 27 degrees Celsius, 92 miles per hour although that might be questionable. We survived it all and even got a couple photos to prove it. Now we are safely back eating dinner at our high camp, anybody for some more mashed potatoes? So I would just like to say that we all made the summit except for Jeff who missed it by about 24 inches but he said that he would be back next year. So thank you for joining us and tomorrow you might want to stay tuned for the big descent. Ciao for now.
Hey there friends, family and loved ones this Snow White and her nine princes we have topped the continent of Antarctica in blowing hail but fortunately we have sunny weather and we can see for miles and miles, mountains in all directions. Everyone is excited to be up here, patting each other on the back, congratulating each other, taking pictures and just generally having a great time. We have got to get out of this wind so we will call you when we get back down to high camp so that you know that we got there safely. Thank you for your interest and we will see you later.
Hey there friends, family and loved ones this is our Vinson Team all tucked in bed with dreams of summits in our head. We had a great rest day today, everyone was feeling pretty tuckered after yesterday’s beat up the hill to high camp but we have recovered and recuperated quite nicely. Lots of food, lots of water, lots of story telling and we are getting pretty psyched at this point to give it a shot tomorrow. We are hoping that the winds come down just a little bit and that the temperatures come up a little bit, if those two things happen we stand a very good chance of fulfilling our dream here so please stay tuned to see what happens. Big Al would like to say high to friends and family, I know that you guys are watching us closely. Hope that you are keeping your fingers crossed and sending your best wishes to us for tomorrow’s shot at the summit. Ciao for now from high camp, Mt. Vinson from the Snow White team.
Hey there friends, family and loved ones this is the Team that can do it all calling in from Vinson. Wow we really lucked out, the wind dropped today and the skies cleared we were able to have an early start today, everyone hustled to get out of camp, it was a long day going up the fixed line over 3,400 ft. When we pulled into high camp here everyone was feeling it but very happy to be here. We set up camp in record time and Michael got on with hot dinner and fed everybody and got them some hot water bottles and they are all headed for bed, we are just getting tucked in ourselves after 1:00 in the morning. We are looking forward to a day of rest tomorrow, of getting fully acclimatized and then hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will have a shot at the summit. So stick around and see what happens next, ciao for now from high on Vinson.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is Snow White and the Seven Grumpy Ascenders, we are calling in from low camp. We are just sitting around eating a hot fried buttered granny cake reminiscing over our day’s activities which consisted of getting up early, eating a little rice pudding, hitting the trail and doing the headwall. We carried a load of food and fuel up above. People are responding quite well the acclimatization day we took yesterday, they moved out and got up the headwall about 30 minutes faster than I had ever been up there before so kudos to the team. We made a cache up at high camp up around 12,500 ft with a gain a little over 3,300 ft today. It was a big day but we are following it with a big dinner, Mike is just knocking it out here, heavy on the butter, yum, high calorie, high butter. Now that it is midnight we are thinking of heading to bed here after we do hot drinks so that is it for now but stay tuned to the further adventures of SW and the grumpy A’s.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is Team Snow White calling in from high on the flanks of Mt Vinson. We had a very action packed day of just laying around sleeping, practicing our techniques for the headwall up the fixed lines and eating great meals. Everyone is getting acclimatized, resting up for the big boost that we are looking forward to tomorrow, running some gear up to high camp so you’ll know what were are doing. Temperatures have been really mellow, we are hitting about -16 Celsius and people’s spirits are high. We got some sunny weather today which just made sitting around that much more enjoyable, quite warm, pretty shocking but we will survive some how so stay tuned to our further adventures, ciao for now.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is team Snow White and the Seven Barbarians calling in from out low camp on the side of the flanks of Mt. Vinson. Today was ominous, we woke with gusting winds, spin drift coming into the sleeping bags and hail and sleet and snow but it didn’t stop us. We got up anyway and had a great breakfast of cold cereal and then we hit the trail and climbed early, everybody packed up, racked up and we got out actually by noon and about 8 ½ hour later we ended up in what we call low camp at 10,143 feet above sea level. We are just finishing up our hot toasted English cake as dessert from a nice dinner of chicken and macaroni and cheese and vegetables that Mike whipped up for us. People are definitely feeling the altitude; it was a good pull today and to celebrate we will probably hang loose tomorrow and Mats wants his mom to know that he is totally bundled up so with that stay tuned to the further adventures of Snow White and the Seven Barbarians.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is Team Ascenders calling from Vinson base camp 6,143 feet above sea level. It has been a very fascinating day, we actually got out of Dodge, that’s Patriot Hills and learned how to do the penguin shoulder thrust technique. We have now established our camp and everyone is heading to bed, we had a great steak dinner that Michael cooked up. We would just like to introduce the whole team, there is Mats, Pam, Rene, Al, Jeff, Fred, Robert and Paul. Robert would like to report that his sat phone is not working so don’t be alarmed. We are looking up at Vinson Massif and it looks intimating, it is covered with snow and the top is wrapped in what seems to be a lenticular cloud however we have got days before we are going to get that high and we were like you to stay with us and follow our progress as we climb to the roof of Antarctica.
Hello there, friends, family and loved ones this is Vern Tejas and Michael Horst reporting in for our wonderful new team to go up Mt. Vinson, we haven’t got a name yet but we are working on it. Everybody just arrived in on a very clear, windless night, two o’clock in the morning they landed and we have got them all set up in tents. Everybody has gone to bed, Michael and I our going to do the same and we are looking forward to heading on over to the mountain tomorrow. So please join us as we climb the highest mountain in Antarctica, night night.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is the Money Anchors calling in from Patriot Hills, right in the middle of Antarctica. Guess what thank you for your wishes and your prayers because the wind has died down; it is dead calm out there and we have got a bird in the air, we are going home very soon (cheers). We are off the continent in about 6 hours, maximum and we will be jumping ships and making our way back to you, our loved ones. Ciao for now from Antarctica from the Money Anchors.
Hey there friends, family and loved ones this is the Belay Anchors beautiful downtown Patriot Hills and the weather persists. Wind howling, katabatics coming down off the high Antarctic Plateau, raking through the camp, which makes for a very interesting visual pattern, not to mention the noise that it creates when it comes across the top of your dinning hall. The team is in good spirits and is barring up well under the agony of the wait. Today is actually the first day that we are suppose to get on the plane to fly back and it doesn’t look like it is going to happen so please bare with us and stay tuned to the further adventures of the Belay Anchors
Hey there friends, family and loved ones this is the Belay Anchors calling in from beautiful downtown Patriot Hills, we are trapped like rats on a sinking ship. I mean we spent the day enjoying the beautiful weather, it was quite windy, no mosquitoes here. Wayne pulled out all the stops and we had (…transmission garbled…) we had a great Cajun meal and we all so got enjoy a show (…transmission break…).
Hello there friends, family and loved ones the Team of Belay Anchors reporting in from lovely downtown Patriot Hills. My, my was it a beautiful day today, sunny and almost calm the whole day long, so what did we do; we basically slept and ate, that was great. The kicker, Tom rose to the occasion and fixed chicken picante with pasta fusilli so it was a delicious dinner that we had this evening. We went over some great stories, everybody telling their favorites, everybody had a pulley theory class in which young Mo excelled immensely, topping it off with the clove hitch for the evening’s dessert. So thank you for joining us and please stay tuned to the further adventures of the Belay Anchors.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is the Belay Anchors calling in from Patriot Hills. Luck was with us, we had a beautiful day to descend the mountain and we made many miles. By the time that we got down to Vinson base camp, there was a twin otter plane waiting for us and with smiles on our face we jumped aboard. We flew all the way to Patriot Hills and we are now sitting down for a nice dinner of mushroom soup and pizza pie. So thanks for joining us, we will see you tomorrow, ciao for now.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is the Belay Anchors calling in from high camp. We have safely descended down other than the hamburger feet that we have but besides that we are safe and sound and happily ensconced in our little cook tent and eating dinner. So thank you for making sure that we got back okay and just remember what we say in the mountains (…transmission garbled…)
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is the Belay Anchors calling from the top of Antarctica, yippee. It has been a good day, it actually broke really calm, really clear and we were able to head out quite early; by 9:00 were on the trial, we were slogging. Guess what the wind has not come up all day, we have some clouds out there but we can still see the silhouette of Mt. Shinn and Epperly and Gardener and even Tyree poking through the clouds. Everybody is exhausted but very happy to be here and Wayne bless his heart has pushed where no man thought that he could go, he has done amazing things today. So hooray for the Belay Anchors (cheers). So hey guys were are thinking of you back home, we are well, we are healthy and we are very happy to be back on top of Antarctica, the summit of Vinson. Alright now thanks for following, we will call you again when we get down safe. So make sure you tune in a little bit later to make sure we are down. Okay ciao for now, love you.
Hey there friends, family and loved ones, Belay Anchors calling in from high camp on Mt. Vinson. It was another rest day, the weather is still not cooperating and we spent most of the day resting, recuperating, eating and playing guitar so it has been a fine day that way. We are hoping for better weather tomorrow, please keep your fingers crossed for us and know that we are thinking of you, ciao for now from high camp on Mt. Vinson.
Hey it was a big day for the Belay Anchors, friends, family and loved ones. What we did today was hang out and sleep. You heard of course that yesterday was very much of a challenging day and today was very opposite, we just stayed in our sleeping bags and only got up for meals and to take care of other things. The weather here has been quite abysmal, not exactly what were hoping for, we have still got high winds and we have still got cold temperatures and clouds. Hopefully that will all figure away tomorrow and we will get up early to sunshine and calm weather and be able to push on and upwards towards the summit. So please stay tuned and join us as the Belay Anchors go to the top of Antarctica. Ciao for now.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is Belay Anchors calling in from high on the slopes of Mt. Vinson. We had a tremendous ordeal yesterday, down low seemed pretty benign so we decided to move up the headwall and came up the headwall in good order, the fixed lines didn’t give us any trouble. But once we got up to the high camp plateau we got hit with some pretty steady, cold winds and really made us work for it when we came into camp, just nip and tuck trying to keep everybody warm and not hypothermic, get them all in the tents and get a meal on so it was quite a challenge, and we didn’t get to bed to four in the morning and we are going to call it a night, stay tuned, ciao for now.
Hello there friends family and loved ones, this is the Belay Anchors calling in from Camp I, we are having a great day and great luck. The storm abated and the sun came up, and we were able to move in very good form. Took us just a little under 4 hours to move from first camp to our second camp, we got it set up really nice, the guys are camping in style. Good cook tent, we just had a meal of salmon and macaroni and cheese, everybody balked at the second round, but they really ate their first round quite well. People are doing well. The team has been very magnanimous in accepting some of my teaching 'styles' and right now we are doing the 'rope rodeo' which is practicing our ascending and descending techniques ultimately for going up the fixed lines above us.
Hello there friends family and loved ones, this is the Bleay Anchors calling in from...Half Camp! We moved up about 1500 feet, we are at approximately 9,000 feet above sea level now and we did it in quite inclement conditions, the team pulled their stuff together, folded up shop and broke out in some windy snowy whiteout conditions and it was tough. Everybody is a little tired and we are really happy to be sitting here cooking dinner, eating soup and crackers and thinking about New Year's Eve back in the states and in Australia as well. So yeah Happy New Year's Australia, we know you have been there first, but we are looking forward to chiming in the new year here in a few hours. So stay tuned and see you in 2010.
Hey there friends family and loved ones, this is team "Belay Anchors"! Ans guess where we are reporting from - yesm that's right - from high on the flanks of Mount Vinson! The highest mountain in Antarctica. We were so lucky today we squeezed in just enough good weather to fly from Patriot Hills about an hour north, about 120 kilometers back to the north, and landed near the Ellsworth Range in really good lighting conditions, we had a great pilot, put us right in at base camp and we spent the day organizing, setting up camp, eating, and now we are working on rigging, because we are getting pretty excited about moving up the mountain tomorrow. So please stay tuned for the further adventures of Belay Anchors!
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is the Vinson Expedition calling in from lovely Patriot Hills, Antarctica. Yes our patience paid off and we actually flew right on schedule, we squeezed in a little weather window and the whole team ended up here on the ice at latitude 80 South and 80 West longitude and we are very happy to say that we are getting ready to start the trip. We flew in and had a great meal and now we have set up all of our tents in case we a get a big blow and we are working on our knots and drinking hot coco and wish you could be here. So stay tuned to the further adventures of Mt. Vinson climbing team, so to be named.
Hey there friends family and loved ones,
To The Summit,
Vern Tejas
Hello friends, family and loved ones,
Vern
Friends family and loved ones,
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is the World Wide Wonders checking in from Mt. Vinson base camp. Yes we descended from high camp about 4,198 meters above sea level to about 2,450 meters here above sea level at base camp so it was a bit of a drop today. It feels good to be back down with the oxygen and the relatively warm temperatures of only 15 below so it has been a good descent. People are looking forward to sleeping with oxygen and many of them calling home when they can. A little celebration here with a great chicken, polenta, veggie dinner, it was good if I do say so myself and I do. So now we are praying for some clear skies and hopefully some weather where we can get back to Patriot Hills, so thank you very much for checking in on us and know that we are thinking of you, night, night.
Hey there friends, family and loved ones this is the World Wide Wonders back safe at our high camp. We had an unmemorable descent, it was hot and long but everyone is tired and elated with our success on summitting Mt. Vinson, the highest mountain in Antarctica. All members made it and two guides so we consider our success something that we would like to share with you so thanks for stopping back in to check us out. We are now going to look at our descent so please follow us as we continue our efforts to get back home. Ciao, ciao for now.
Hey there friends, family and loved ones, this is the World Wide Wonders reporting in from the top of Antarctica. It is a spectacular day, there is hardly a breath of wind in the air and we can see from over there to all the way over there to the other side of the horizon. It is beautiful and the mountains are sticking up out of the clouds, a huge sea of clouds underneath us but we can see the fourth and the fifth and the second highest all sticking their heads up above the clouds. Everybody is excited to be here, feeling happy and elated, thinking of friends and family and loved ones and taking some photographs and patting each other on the back and congratulating. I wish that you could be here it so beautiful.
Hey there friends, family and loved ones, World Wide Wonders checking in from high camp, we are about 13,500 ft about sea level, that 4,185 meters for the international folks out there. Everybody is very tired from the push up however everyone is in excellent spirits. We just had dinner and we are tucking everybody in, the sun is shining, a light breeze and 32 degrees below zero Celsius still. We are having a good time, we are all pretty keyed up at taking a look at tomorrow morning and seeing if its doable so we will keep you abreast of the situation as it unwinds, ciao for now form Mt. Vinson.
Hi there, hello there friends, family and loved ones this is the World Wide Wonders doing what we do best, climbing mountains. Today was a big day, 9 hours on the trail. We got up early, had a nice breakfast of cold cereal and put them on the trail nice and early. We have been out for 9 hours today; we got our stuff moved however up to high on the mountain. We moved food, fuel and camping supplies up to over 12,000 feet, high camp. So we are in pretty good position now, all we have to do is refuel so we are all in the cook tent right now jamming in dinner. We have got some chicken noodle soup and some monster steaks coming out and lots of good stuff, some vegetables on the way just to show (…transmission break…) what do you say guys, how are you feeling, the team is going to be home for Christmas so take that as an advisement and either be there or be somewhere else. Wishing you the best from high on the flanks of Mt. Vinson, World Wide Wonders – over and out.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones, World Wide Wonders checking in from camp II at 3115 meters above sea level, eighteen degrees below and good night basically. Life is good we are just finishing off dinner. We have had a great practice today for the fixed lines coming up tomorrow; people have now done it with the gloves on and their big thick gloves on and most of them have done it through their mittens we are going to keep practicing so that we can move efficiently tomorrow. Everybody seems to be feeling very good, appetites are up there and Tim is cooking up a storm and we just want to say hello to you guys, we love you.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones this is Team World Wide Wonders reporting in high on the side of Mt. Vinson. Today we moved up, it was a long hard day pulling big sleds up the hill but fortunately the weather was on our side; no wind, no snow just fog. Lots of fog, didn’t know where we were going until we got to camp I. The team was very happy to be here because after that long fog Tim pulled out some hamburgers and cooked them for us and everybody ate them with relish well we didn’t actually find the relish but we ate them with gusto well we didn’t find the gusto either however it was very, very tasty. With that we all climbed into our beds at one o’clock in the morning and so we went to sleep. So join us for the further adventures of World Wide Wonders.
Hello there friends, family and loved ones reporting in not only from Antarctica but also from the base, yes the base of Mt. Vinson. We arrived at Vinson base camp after a short flight in the twin otters from Patriot Hills. Everybody’s spirits were lifted as the plane took off and we got to see the great mountains of the Ellsworth Range as flew backwards and north about 100 miles to find the highest mountains on the continent; (…transmission garbled…) and Mt. Vinson rearing its ugly head high above the horizon. Are paced quickened as we unloaded the plane and thought of nothing but how can we set up our camp quick enough so that we can get some sleep that we missed last night. Before we could do that, Tim, our fearless chef whipped up a passel of hot pea noodle soup that had never been tasted before on Antarctica and some great tasting steaks and everybody went to bed happy and healthy. So say hello to mom, people are in good spirits, ciao for now from high on the flanks of Mt. Vinson.
