Alpine Ascents Guide
Alpine Ascents cultivates strong mentorship and friendship between guides by promoting a culture of growth and support. I believe that people do their best work when they feel empowered, and Alpine Ascents does a remarkable job of making that happen. It seems easy to feel home here, between the inspiring caliber of my co-guides, the hilarious asides in company-wide emails, and Alpine Ascents’ commitment to diversity. When I came to Alpine Ascents from another PNW guide service and was asked if I’d rather participate in the all female returning guide training or the co-ed one at the beginning of the season, I was blown away! I immediately felt that I was in the right place, and as time went on I realized I have never felt more valued by an employer than I do here.

Alpine Ascents Guide
Working for Alpine Ascents over the past few seasons has really opened my eyes to what’s possible in a guiding career. The company does a fantastic job at retaining highly experienced guides which translates to great networking, mentorship, and a high degree of risk management. After working for another guide service in the PNW, I came to Alpine Ascents to learn from the best and have gotten exactly that. For how big of a company AAI is, I find it remarkable how they cultivate a culture of learning, inclusion, and a shared mission. It means a lot to get the schedule for each season and be excited to work with some top notch guides. Looking forward to many trips to come!

Alpine Ascents Guide
As a guide, it is super important to me to work for a guide service that is responsive to the needs of their guide staff, first and foremost–and in turn, trusts their guides, as professionals, to deliver a high quality climbing or skiing trip. I’ve been in work environments where the office skipped over the guides and responded to the clients’ needs first, which feels isolating and “othering” and is distinctly unsustainable. Managing and supporting guides in the structures of employment in the U.S. is not an easy task, but it is clearly a priority for Mary, guide manager, and Jonathon, director of field operations. For example, they have structured feedback sessions with guides every year. And every year they implement new and creative programs in response to this feedback. I try to remember to express my gratitude to them directly, whenever I can, and perhaps that is where their intentions become most clear. The last time I started to say, “the reason I like working for you…” Jonathon corrected me: “You don’t work for us, you work with us.”

Alpine Ascents Guide
After many years of bouncing around guide services between Wyoming and Oregon, I have found that Alpine Ascents is truly one of the top notch companies to work for. I was welcomed in with open arms through community, connection, and mentorship in ways that I hadn’t experienced at a guide company before. Alpine Ascents has an extraordinary office staff, guide staff, and support staff to the point that at any given point in time I have always felt 100% supported as a female guide in the industry. If I could choose to work for a company that would give me the opportunities to connect with incredible IFMGA guides as mentors, build personal relationships, and have the opportunity to create dream programs for clients it would be Alpine Ascents International, without a doubt. As a professional mountain guide and AMGA Certified Ski Guide I feel so incredibly supported by this company in my growth and development. I am SO grateful to be a part of this top tier staff!

Alpine Ascents Guide
I began guiding two years ago with Alpine Ascents not knowing what I wanted out of guiding. I was a rising junior in college studying public policy at USC. I had a passion for mountaineering from a very young age, but I never considered a career in the mountains because, coming from a Chicago suburb, no one around me was in the outdoor education world. At first I was excited to mountain guide simply to have more time in the mountains, but the past two summers guiding for AAI ended up changing my entire career path. As a young woman, stepping into the guiding world was daunting. I was worried stereotypes I had faced would only be heightened, but AAI offered such an incredibly welcoming culture. Never once did they question my abilities due to my age, size, or gender. They also struck a great balance between understanding I was a new guide with much more to learn and setting clear professional expectations for client care and safety. The acceptance and mentorship I have found at this company my past two years has allowed me to improve exponentially in my guiding and climbing skills. I am so grateful to be working with such amazing people.

BIPOC Guide Development Program
![]()
Mountaineering should be a source of adventure and empowerment for everyone. To increase the representation of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) individuals in the mountain guiding industry, Alpine Ascents International created the Guide Development Program—a professional job-training and mentorship initiative designed to prepare participants for careers in mountain guiding.
This program is built for experienced recreational climbers and outdoor educators who are ready to transition from personal climbing to professional guiding. Over the course of the season, participants receive hands-on instruction, field-based training, and career mentorship from Alpine Ascents staff and guides of color currently working in the industry. The curriculum focuses on the glaciated climbing, risk-management, and leadership skills essential for a successful guiding career, while also fostering the community and confidence needed to thrive in the field.
While successful completion of the program does not guarantee employment with Alpine Ascents, it is designed to prepare participants to meet the standards expected of professional guides and to strengthen future job applications. Our goal is to provide high-quality, inclusive training opportunities, clarify what we look for in guide candidates (see linked PDF), and connect aspiring guides with a network of peers and mentors dedicated to continued growth.
Since its launch, the Guide Development Program has helped build a growing network of BIPOC climbers and guides who are shaping the future of mountain guiding—creating a stronger, more inclusive outdoor industry for the next generation.
“Due to systems of privilege and oppression that have been in place for generations, it can be hard to break in to guiding. But it’s because of programs like this that the narrative is slowly changing. In the Guide Development Program we get free mentorship and training, gear support, and an amazing cohort of humans to cheer you on and grow with you, each with their own powerful, unique story. ” -2024 cohort member’s testimonial
