Dear Alpine Ascents: Packing for Backcountry Skiing

dear alpine ascents: packing for backcountry skiing

Hey Alpine,

I just took my AIARE Level 1 Course last month (115% worth it) and my friends invited me to go backcountry skiing this weekend. Psyched. I do a lot of day hiking but am pretty new to ski touring. Could you give me a primer on how to pack for a day on the skin track?  Thanks!

Sincerely,
Finally Earning My Turns

Hi Earning Turns,

Stoked to hear that you’re making the transition into backcountry skiing! No lift lines for you. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Does that mean a video is worth a million words?   Either way, check out this video of our Director of Field Operations and all around backcountry skiing savant, Jonathon Spitzer, break down how to pack for a day of ski touring. Best of luck this weekend! May you find all the pow stashes. 🙂

See You in the Mountains,
Alpine

Yet the Teepee, Schoolroom, and Skillet Glaciers of the Tetons are dwarfs compared to the glaciers […]
