Team Mountain Mama: Back in Bali

Team Mountain Mama awoke at 05.00 at Carstensz Basecamp to some of the nicest weather we have seen this trip – which gave us hopes of flying.  Indeed – fly we did!  We went from base camp this morning to Timika, arriving in time to grab a quick shower and transfer onward to our flight to Bali – where we have just moved in to our hotel and are freshening up before a celebratory dinner!Helicopter PIckup.jpgTeam back in Bali.jpg

RTB: Returned To Base

…after a 45 minute helicopter flight, we were shut down by the cloud ceiling.  We returned To Base (RTB) and will try again tomorrow.  Here are some photos from the air of the Freeport Mine, a gold and copper mine that is among the largest in the world.

…after a morning of standby at the heliport our flight was called off for weather. We spent the afternoon touring Kuala Kencana, the living facility for Freeport mine employees, as rain poured. We’ll be up at 05.15 for another go at it…

We’re currently standing by in Timika. Weather report from the Yellow Valley base camp is good, and we’re waiting for weather to clear on the approach… Geneva and I will be on the first flight in. Psyched!
