Chiva quiteña team Dec 11th 2022

A few days ago we hiked in the eastern paramos of Papallacta, enjoying the fog and humidity that makes this sector a special and unique place.

Enjoying a day of active rest in the valley of Tumbaco, we got ready to leave for our first mountain, Antisana located in the eastern part of our mountain range, now we are back after 3 intense days of “high mountain” acclimatizing and practicing/remembering glacier skills. Trees days of enjoinment!!! the full moon was there with all its highs and lows, starry nights illuminated by the moon as well as lenticular (very windy clouds) entering from the east with all the strength of the mountain, covering it like a white mantle.

Summit day, starts at midnight almost without the use of flashlights, we encourage each other and support each other for what is coming. A few hours later the mountain makes us feel that it is alive, more alive than ever, after 6 hours of navigating between crevasses and with a white mantle we arrived at 18,350 feet where we decided to turn back, the weather conditions and the snow transport were not ideal to continue trying to the summit, with mixed feelings we decided to return, safe and sound and a little tired we were at 9am in our base camp.

A few days of rest for what is to come, one day at a time is what the mountain has taught us.

Send us good luck (good weather as well)

Thanks to all the guides, Francisco Pulluquitin, Paul Guerra, Diego Zurita, Fatima Serrano and Mauricio Beltran to make thus attempt safe and fun!

“Chiva quiteña” Dec 6th

One of those unforgettable days in the lagoons of Papallacta, today we were lucky enough to walk to the lagoon of Parcacocha with an incredible sun, as well the Milagrosa waterfall , 5hr walk-tour around 13,000 feet, we continue acclimatizing and above all enjoying Ecuador with this super team.

Being on the eastern slopes of the Cordillera is magical, having the view of the Amazon and being able to see the Antisana Volcano at the same time only happens in Ecuador, in this area.

The group feels good and motivated for what is coming next!

Team “Chiva quiteña” Dec 5th

Today we had a great day hiking up Pasochoa, this old volcano at 13.800 feet, we enjoy the good weather during our climb with some rain “of course” later in the afternoon, “welcome to Ecuador”. Pasochoa is a great climb because has a really nice view from the valley and volcanoes in the surroundings, like Cotopaxi, Antisana, Sincholagua and the Quito valley as well. We run with lucky in our drive to the lodge and we were able to see an “Andean Bear” some excitement around that. Now we are ready to enjoy the hot springs at Papallacta and tomorrow we will keep our acclimatization going. A short presentation about our team!!!! Ecuador trip, last days!

Last report from the Ecuador group, a few days later here we are.

We enjoyed the Ilinizas in a different way, a different terrain to the previous glaciers, a more alpine terrain, rock, snow, something more expedition. We hiked 3hr to the refuge where we spent the night and enjoyed a small storm, the North Iliniza was covered in white, more than normal. In those conditions we all climbed up to about 16,600 feet, passing snowy ridges and enjoying something new.

What followed for the AA team was pure tasting, thanks to the motivation of one of the team members we decided to have a full day tasting the best gastronomy of Quito/Ecuador, two incredible restaurants, Shibumi (a classic Japanese restaurant with local fish) and SOMOS (we had a tasting dinner) one of the most recognized restaurants in the country.

In this way we said goodbye to Ecuador, “Eating” one of our favorite moments.

Good summits and see you next time!

The guides are first rate. Jose Luis, Renee, Javier and Pepe all had strong mountain skills and good people skills, the combination I feel makes for a great climbing trip. I can not say enough about Jose Luis!
