Update from Talkeetna

Hi folks!

Alpine Ascents office staff here reporting that Denali Teams 1 and 2 (known as “Snow Country for Old Men” and “Denali Forever”) have flown off the glacier and are safely back in Talkeetna. Climbers are in the process of heading back to their respective homes after the adventure of a lifetime. Thanks for following along!

“Denali Forever” Returns to Basecamp in Challenging Conditions

“Hot Hands Cold Play” settles in to 11,200 feet

“Dreadnoughtasauras” Acclimatizes at 14,000 ft

The team back carried today after a morning after a slow cold morning spent eating breakfast in our sleeping bags. Guide Dakota Schlag made delicious french toast! The back carry took 2 and a half hours. On return we reviewed a few skills before entering a well deserved rest period. Tomorrow we will continue resting, acclimatizing and take our first full rest day after 8 days of load hauling up the Kahiltna to 14k’ foot camp on Denali. The team should be proud!

“Grateful Sled” Retrieves Cache and Shares Special Moments

This is Matt with team 4, Grateful Sled. Yesterday we moved from 11k camp and climbed 3000 vertical feet, establishing a new camp at 14k. Today we went to pick our cache up at 13.5k and returned to 14k with all of our belongings. Tomorrow we are taking a well deserved rest day before looking at a move to the upper mountain. I am so excited to announce (with their permission) that team members Andrew and Melissa got engaged today on a beautiful overlook near camp with the finest views in North America in the backdrop. Love is in the air up here!

I was seeking a life time experience on a major mountain and I got it.

  • Denali ’24 in a Nutshell

Submission by Jess, Alaska Operations. When I touched down in Talkeetna this year, greeted by sunny skies and perfect weather, I couldn’t help but feel hopeful for a smoother forecast for Denali climbing season compared to the previous year’s relentlessly poor weather. Julia was clearly on the same wavelength because just a few weeks before, […]
