Another beautiful day of hiking with views of the mountains for our trekkers, as they make their way to Everest Base Camp

Hey everyone, this is Sarah calling from the Everest base camp trek and I am calling from Lobuche (which is about 4910 meters, which is just over 15,000 feet).

And all is well here, we are tucked into bed after a great day of hiking.  We got up and had a beautiful, crystal clear morning, as has been our usual, we feel pretty darn lucky.  We had a great view of the mountains all the way up on our hike.  It took us about four, four and a half hours, with a nice stop for noodles and tea in the middle.  And we spent the afternoon relaxing and enjoying the views around town and some of us hiked up and got a glimpse of the Khumbu Glacier.

So everyone’s happy and healthy and doing really well; and after a great dinner, everyone’s tucked into bed and looking forward to a nice day tomorrow.  Our plan tomorrow is to go to Gorak Shep and have lunch there, and actually head to Everest Base Camp.

So we’ll call you after tomorrow.  All is well, bye!

Our acclimatization day in Pheriche

Hello from Pheriche. We are hanging out at our tea house in Pheriche after a great hike this morning. As usual (we are getting spoiled) we awoke to clear skies. We had a great breakfast and headed out for a hike. There is a hill right on the edge of town, so our hike started out straight up. Once we gained the first ridge, we were greeted with views of Ama Dablam, Makalu, Baruntse, Island Peak, Lhotse and other peaks. It was an incredible view. We continued us the ridge line and gained 1500-2000 feet. The views were tremendous and the walking was really enjoyable. We came down to the lodge for lunch and an afternoon of free time. Folks are showering, studying maps, reading, playing chess, and relaxing this afternoon. We are happy and healthy here in the Khumbu. We will write again tomorrow.

Everest Base Camp team arrives in Pheriche in time to catch the Himalayan Rescue Association Altitude talk

Hey everyone, this is Sarah calling from the Everest Base Camp trek, I’m calling from Pheriche where all is well.

We had a great day today, we got up at our normal hour, had breakfast and started hiking at about eight and got to our lunch, somewhere around eleven, so pretty darn efficient morning. A nice, mellow, two and a half hours worth of walking, and then from lunch we had another about two hours of walking up to Pheriche and everyone arrived in really good style and feeling good, feeling strong.

And we actually arrived with enough time to attend the altitude talk at the Himalayan Rescue Association at three o’clock, so we got to sit down and listen to one of the doctors, who is from the UK, talk about altitude illness, signs and symptoms, treatment, and the programs the Himalayan Rescue Association has going on up here. It was a great talk, and a great opportunity to interface with them. And then we had a nice afternoon of playing cards, and reading books, and socializing followed by a great dinner.

We’re looking forward to a little bit later breakfast tomorrow morning, and then we’re going to do an acclimatization hike and then have a nice afternoon off for everyone to recharge their batteries and rest before we go up high.

So everyone’s healthy and happy, and we will call you tomorrow, bye!

Our hike from Khumjung to Deboche

Hello everyone! It’s another day in paradise here. We are warm and well-fed in Deboche tonight. We woke up to yet another gorgeous morning. We walked up to Khunde this morning and had a look at the hospital funded by Edmund Hillary’s foundation. We were hoping for a tour, but we were too early, so we had to settle for a look around the outside of the building. After that, we headed out and had a beautiful hike. Our hike to lunch was all downhill, which made for pleasant walking. After lunch, we climbed for 2 hours up to Tengboche, and treated ourselves to the delicious baked goods at the local bakery, where the sweet treats could only be topped by the views. After having a look around the monestary, we headed down to Deboche. From the windows of our lodge, we had great views of Everest and Lhotse. Life is good! Everyone is doing great. We will write again tomorrow.

Another Beautiful day on the Everest Base Camp Trek

Hello from the Ama Dablam View Lodge in Khumjung. We are gathered around the warm stove after a delicious dinner if yak steaks, potatoes, vegetables, and apple pie. Everyone is in high spirits after another beautiful day on the trail. We started the morning by visiting Lakpa Rita’s parents house and having tea. It was a treat to meet them and to see Lakpa’s family home. From there, we headed down the trail, enjoying the amazing views around every twist and turn. We stopped and had lunch along the way and then climbed our way up to Khumjung. We arrived at the lodge around 2:30 pm, with plenty of time to enjoy tea, popcorn, cheese and crackers and some time to read and nap. All is well! We will write again tomorrow.

This trip pushed me technically, provided an awesome travel and cultural experience, and perhaps the most special gift is that I got to learn about the work of the Alpine Ascents Foundation. I’m especially happy to support the latter, and look forward to it being another avenue for me to deepen my relationship with Alpine […]
