Everest Base Camp Trek: Carousing in Lukla

Namaste Friends, Family & Loved Ones,

We tried to make the most of our last trekking day today by starting with a group photo, below.

The five hours on the trail seemed easy compared to prior days at higher elevations, and the fertile terrain of the lower Khumbu Valley made for some very picturesque walking.

We got on the trail relatively early, both to beat the “rush hour” congestion of Trekkers and pack animals, and also to make sure that we arrived in Lukla in time for lunch and a full afternoon of enjoying all that Lukla has to offer: namely, cappuccino, the Irish and Scottish pubs, and of course shopping. The Kowboys also were able to meet the daughter and youngest grandson of our hosts in Namche.

It’s been my pleasure to introduce the Team to our extended Sherpa family here in the Khumbu.

Tonight we had the first of our celebration dinners — libations, toasts and lots of chicken chili, pizza and momos. Tomorrow, assuming that weather cooperates, it’s back to Kathmandu!

Island Peak Climbers Descend to Monjo

Namaste Friends, Family & Loved Ones,

We woke up to a beautiful sunny day in Namche. After two long trekking days, it felt luxurious to spend a relaxed morning here doing our own thing. Some of us went shopping and explored “downtown” Namche.

About half the team took a helicopter ride and went flight-seeing. How cool to fly over the trails that we’ve walked and see the villages, monasteries and peaks from above — a whole new perspective on how much ground we’ve covered over the last two weeks.

After one last gourmet lunch at the Panorama Lodge (featuring our favorite–freshly made Tibetan Bread (crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside; yum)),

we walked down Namche Hill,

crossed the high suspension bridge (above us in the photo below)

and ambled the rest of the way to our teahouse in Monjo. Hard to believe that tomorrow is our last day of trekking!

Everest Base Camp Trek Cleans Up in Namche

Friends, family & loved ones,

After much anticipation, considerable discussion and enormous excitement, I am happy to report that the team has taken showers in Namche. Yes, my friends, hot showers. And a whole new outlook on life.

Oh, and by the way, we also had a great trek down here today from Dingboche. Beautiful weather, a nice lunch at Tengboche and afternoon tea with a Himalayan view (see below). What more could you ask for (other than a hot shower)?

Climbers head for Island Peak

Namaste friends, family and loved ones,

Up early and on the trail to Chekung the five of us enjoyed the warmth of the sun. With some of the worlds most iconic mountains towering above us our trek was sheer delight. We spent our afternoon in a Rope Rodeo practicing our climbing skills for the challenge ahead.

Chekung at 4800 meters is our last village before Island Peak base camp, our goal for tomorrow. The team is acclimatized and ready to climb!

All my best,
Vern Tejas

The trip was up to AAI standards. Organization, logistics and quality of itinerary were excellent. Vern and Carole were fantastic, and the weather was excellent : ) Vern and Carole added a great deal to the quality of the trip. In sharing their knowledge of the area, the people, high altitude travel etc. they raised the trip to a level other companies only aspire to reach.
