As with our North India tour, this is a handpicked itinerary prepared by Gordon Janow, Director of Programs, and offers quality lodging throughout the journey (all 5 * star hotels except 1-2 locations).
The region of South India offers unique insight and traditional view of Indian culture and offers four distinct types of touring; Hindu temples and culture with its Dravidian architecture, hill stations and plantation areas of the central region, lush tropical scenery along with west coast and visits to the cities that were developed in the French and Dutch colonial areas. In short, a panoply of sites with a distinctly different culture from other parts of the region. This tour is set to be guided by our India experts Gordon Janow and Yatish Bahuguna. Day 1: Travel

Day 2: Travel

Day 3: Chennai
Arrive at Chennai int’l airport from your home country by morning. You will be met on arrival by our English speaking local representative & driver and transferred to your hotel. Please note that your room becomes available in the afternoon unless early check-in is requested.
Later in the afternoon we will enjoy a half day sightseeing this fourth largest city in India. Lying on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, it is a city famous for its beaches, historical monuments, and its rich cultural heritage.
Our visit includes:
- The Fort Museum (remain closed on Friday’s), in the old Exchange Building near the fort entrance, has military memorabilia from the British and French East India Companies, as well as the Raj and Muslim administrations. There’s a scale model of the fort in Gallery 2 and some fine prints upstairs depicting early colonial Madras.
- Museum(remain closed on Friday’s), housed across several British-built buildings known as the Pantheon Complex. This excellent museum is Chennai’s best.
- Built in 1504, then rebuilt in neogothic style in 1893, San Thome Cathedral is a soaring Roman Catholic church between Kapaleeshwarar Temple and Marina Beach. In the basement is a chapel housing the tomb of St Thomas the Apostle (Doubting Thomas).
- And finally, the ancient Shiva Kapaleeshwarar Templeis constructed in the Dravidian style and displays the architectural elements – rainbow-colour gopurams (gateway towers), mandapams (pavilions in front of a temple) and a huge tank – found in the famous temple cities of Tamil Nadu. Day 4: Chennai – Kanchipuram – Mahabalipuram
After an early breakfast we drive to Kanchipuram (about 85 km / 02-03 hrs), famous throughout India for its silk saris, this temple town is also a treasure-trove of Hindu temples and art from the Pallava, Chola and Pandyan dynasties.
On arrival, enjoy a half day sightseeing to the towering Ekambareswar Temple, which holds prime importance in Kanchipuram. Spread over an area of 20 acres, the gopuram (rising tower at the entrance of the temple) stands tall at 57 metres. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple has beautifully sculptured granite walls and a thousand-pillared hall. Varadaraja Perumal Temple with a 100-pillar mandapam is another architectural delight. Other temples in our visit are Kailasnatha Temple, Kamakshi Amman Temple and Vaikuntha Perumal Temple.
After having lunch at a local restaurant, we drive to Mahabalipuram (about 70 km / 02 hrs), check into the next hotel and relax. O/n Hotel.
Day 5: Mahabalipuram
After breakfast we enjoy this old port town, which has been listed as a World Heritage site and remains a renowned centre for stone carving; you’ll see and hear the constant tapping of hammer and chisel as artisans chip away at exquisite sculptures.
We will spend a half day sightseeing monuments built in the Dravidian style of architecture and constructed from a single stone each. We will visit the most famous monument here, the Shore Temple. It is as ancient as 1,400 years old. The temple was built in honor of Lord Vishnu, there are five chariots here called Pancha Pandava Rathas and each is named after the five.
Afternoon free to relax on the beach. O/n Hotel.

Day 6: Mahabalipuram – Pondicherry
After breakfast we drive to Ponducherry (about 100 km / 03 hrs), enroute we visit the salt making fields aswell as Auroville, located just outside Pondicherry. Auroville is an experimental township and a universal city of human unity. Visit the Matrimandir, a unique architectural marvel and the spiritual center of Auroville. Spend time exploring the green surroundings and experiencing the community’s vibrant culture.
Arrive and check into your hotel and later in the afternoon enjoy visiting this former French colony, which was settled in the early 18th century as a colonial enclave and it retains a mildly Gallic air superimposed on a typical Indian background.
Known for its French influence, serene beaches, and spiritual retreats, Pondicherry offers a unique blend of Indian and French cultures. Here are some popular sightseeing spots in Pondicherry:
- Sri Aurobindo Ashram: Founded by Sri Aurobindo and his spiritual collaborator, The Mother, this ashram is a hub of spirituality and tranquility. Visitors can meditate in the peaceful atmosphere or explore the ashram’s bookshop and library.
- French Quarter: Stroll through the charming streets of the French Quarter, also known as the White Town, and admire the well-preserved colonial architecture. Visit iconic landmarks like the French Consulate, Notre Dame des Anges Church, and the Old Lighthouse.
- Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: This beautiful Catholic church is an architectural marvel with stunning stained glass panels depicting scenes from the life of Jesus. It is one of the most visited religious sites in Pondicherry.
- Promenade Beach: This is the most famous beach in Pondicherry, offering a scenic view of the Bay of Bengal. Take a leisurely walk along the promenade, visit the iconic Mahatma Gandhi statue, and enjoy the cool sea breeze.
These are just a few highlights of Pondicherry’s sightseeing options. The city has much more to offer in terms of its cuisine, vibrant markets, yoga retreats, and art galleries. Day 7: Pondicherry – Thanjavur
After an early breakfast drive to Thanjavur (about 225 km / 05-06 hrs), enroute visit Chidambaram’s great temple complex of Nataraja, the dancing Shiva. This is a Dravidian architectural highlight and one of the holiest Shiva sites in South India as well as other famous Temples of Darasuram, Gangaikondacholapuram & Kumbakonam.

Day 8: Thanjavur
After breakfast we enjoy a full day sightseeing of Thanjavur. The city, also known as Tanjore, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, particularly its contribution to classical music, dance, and architecture. Here are some of the must-visit sights in Thanjavur:
- Brihadeeswarar Temple: This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most significant temples in India. Built by the Chola king Rajaraja I in the 11th century, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple’s towering vimana (temple tower) is an architectural marvel, and the temple complex houses several other smaller shrines and sculptures.
- Thanjavur Palace: Also known as Maratha Palace, this historic palace complex was constructed by the Nayak and Maratha rulers of Thanjavur. It consists of various structures, including the Saraswathi Mahal Library, art gallery, and the Royal Museum, which exhibits a vast collection of artifacts, weaponry, and royal memorabilia.
- Saraswathi Mahal Library: Located within the Thanjavur Palace complex, this library is one of the oldest libraries in Asia. It houses a remarkable collection of ancient manuscripts and palm leaf manuscripts on various subjects including literature, science, and medicine.
- Thanjavur Art Gallery: Situated within the Thanjavur Palace complex, this gallery displays a splendid collection of sculptures, bronze idols, and artifacts dating back to the Chola and Nayak periods. It offers insights into the rich artistic heritage of the region.
- Sangeetha Mahal: This music hall within the Thanjavur Palace complex is renowned for its acoustics. It was used for performances and concerts during the reign of the Maratha kings and continues to host cultural events today.

Day 9: Thanjavur – Trichy
After breakfast we drive to Trichy (about 65 km / 02 hrs), check into the hotel and later in the afternoon enjoy a half day sightseeing. Trichy, officially known as Tiruchirappalli, is a bustling city, which boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage, along with modern developments. Here are some of the top sights to see in Trichy:
- Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple: Located on an island in the Kaveri River, this temple is one of the largest functioning Hindu temples in the world. Dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a form of Lord Vishnu, the temple is renowned for its intricate Dravidian architecture and vast complex.
- Rock Fort Temple (Ucchi Pillayar Temple): Perched atop a massive rock formation, the Rock Fort Temple is an iconic landmark of Trichy. It comprises two Hindu temples, the Ucchi Pillayar Temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha and the Thayumanaswamy Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The climb to the top offers panoramic views of the city.
- Srirangam:Situated near Trichy, Srirangam is an island formed by the Kaveri and Kollidam rivers. It is home to the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, as well as several other temples, shrines, and religious landmarks. The annual Vaikunta Ekadasi festival celebrated here is famous for its grandeur.

Day 10: Trichy – Madurai
After breakfast drive to Madurai (about 135 km / 03-04 hrs). Often called the “Athens of the East,” Madurai is a historical city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Arrive and check into your hotel and relax.
Later attend the evening ceremony at the Meenakshi Amman Temple, a spectacular event that takes place daily and is a highlight for visitors. Here is some information about the evening ceremony:
- Timing: The evening ceremony, known as the “Night Pooja” or “Aarti,” generally takes place after sunset, around 6:30 PM or 7:00 PM. It is recommended to check the temple’s schedule for the exact timing, as it may vary.
- Procession: The ceremony begins with a grand procession of the temple deities, Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar, from their respective shrines within the temple complex. The deities are adorned with elaborate decorations, jewelry, and vibrant silk clothing.
- Music and Chants: As the procession moves through the temple corridors, traditional music, including the Nadaswaram (a wind instrument) and drums, fills the air. Devotees and temple priests chant hymns and prayers dedicated to the deities.
- Lamp Lighting: At the main shrine, the priests perform the Aarti ceremony. They carry brass lamps with burning camphor and circle them in front of the deities in a clockwise direction. The mesmerizing sight of the flickering lamps illuminates the sanctum sanctorum.
- Devotional Offerings: Devotees gather around the shrine and offer flowers, fruits, and coconuts as a sign of reverence. They also seek blessings and offer their prayers to the deities.
- Final Blessings:After the Aarti, the priests distribute sacred ash, known as Vibhuti, and sacred water to the devotees as a blessing. It is believed to have spiritual and healing properties.
Attending the evening ceremony at the Meenakshi Amman Temple provides a unique opportunity to witness the grandeur of the temple, experience the devotional atmosphere, and immerse yourself in the cultural and religious traditions of Madurai. It is advisable to arrive early to secure a good spot and to respect the temple’s rules and regulations during the ceremony.
Day 11: Madurai
In the morning we explore the vibrant streets of Madurai. The famous Puthu Mandapam market and the flower market are enriching experiences. We return to our hotel to freshen up before enjoying a half day sightseeing of this city. Known for its rich cultural heritage and magnificent temples, Madurai offers a range of sightseeing options. Here are some popular attractions to explore in Madurai:
- Meenakshi Amman Temple: The Meenakshi Amman Temple is the most iconic landmark of Madurai and one of the largest temple complexes in India. Dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi (Parvati) and Lord Sundareswarar (Shiva), the temple is renowned for its stunning architecture, intricate carvings, and colorful gopurams (gateway towers). The Thousand Pillar Hall, Golden Lotus Tank, and the musical pillars are must-see features within the temple. We visit Oct 24 for the evening ceremony.
- Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal: Built in the 17th century by King Thirumalai Nayak, this palace reflects a fusion of Dravidian and Islamic architectural styles. Although only a small part of the original palace remains, the grandeur of its architecture and the sound and light show held in the evening make it a worthwhile visit.
- Gandhi Memorial Museum: Located in the historic Tamukkam Palace, this museum is dedicated to the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. It houses a collection of photographs, artifacts, and documents associated with Gandhi and India’s struggle for independence.
Afternoon at leisure or free to explore the local bazaar around the Temple followed by watching Light & Sound show at Thirumalai Naykar Palace later in the evening. O/n Hotel.

Day 12: Madurai – Munnar
After an early breakfast drive to Munnar (about 175 km / 05 hrs), a picturesque hill station covered with unending expanses of tea plantations. Arrive and check into your hotel and relax or free to stroll around your hotel. O/n Hotel.
Day 13: Munnar – Kumarakom
After an early breakfast we enjoy 02-03 hrs trek through the Letchmi Hills. This trek will start at the height of approximately 1450 MASL with a walk through the tea plantations for about 30 to 40 minutes. On reaching the summit, the trek will continue for a couple of hours on the ridge through stunningly beautiful grasslands with rocky mountain slope on one side and the tea plantations on the other with interspersed patches of Shola forest. On a clear day, we can see Anaimudi “The highest peak in South India.” We will also pass through a private coffee and cardamom plantation in the Shola Forest where there is a high chance of spotting the endemic birds. Like its start, the trek will finish with a walk through a tea plantation to meet our cab waiting to transfer us back to the hotel or to visit other destinations as per the program. The highest point of this trek will be about 1950MASL approx.
We have the option to shorten the trek if desired.
Starting point – Old Munnar
Ending point – Laxmi – Mankulam road
Later, we drive to Kumarakom (about 185 km / 05-06 hrs) and check into our hotel located on the banks of Vembanadu Lake and relax. O/n Hotel.

Day 14: Kumarakom – Alleppey
Early in the morning, enjoy a canoe ride during sunrise on the backwaters of Kerala is a breathtaking and serene experience that many tourists and travelers seek when visiting this beautiful region in southwestern India. The backwaters of Kerala are a network of interconnected rivers, lakes, and canals, and they offer a unique and tranquil environment for such a ride.
Here’s what you can expect from a canoe ride during sunrise on the backwaters of Kerala:
- Scenic Beauty: The backwaters are known for their lush greenery, palm-fringed shores, and serene waters. During sunrise or sunset, the landscape is bathed in soft, golden light, creating a magical atmosphere.
- Peace and Tranquility: The backwaters provide a peaceful and quiet environment, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The gentle swaying of the canoe on the water and the sounds of nature around you make for a meditative experience.
- Wildlife Viewing: Keep an eye out for various bird species, including kingfishers, egrets, and other waterfowl. You may also spot local fishermen at work and perhaps even some aquatic life like fish and turtles.
- Cultural Interaction: Along the way, you may encounter local communities living by the backwaters. This can be an opportunity to learn about the unique way of life in the region and interact with the friendly locals.
- Photo Opportunities: The stunning views and picturesque surroundings offer plenty of opportunities to capture beautiful photographs, making it a great experience for photography enthusiasts.
- Traditional Canoes: Most of these canoe rides are conducted in traditional wooden canoes, which are either motorized or hand-paddled by local boatmen who are well-versed in the intricacies of the backwaters.
- Time required: 02 hrs from 06-08 hrs
After a leisurely breakfast we drive to Alleppey (about 45 km / 01 hr), where you board your houseboat. The houseboat has furnished bed rooms with attached bath and toilets. Start your enchanting cruise through the backwaters of Alleppey till 17.30 hrs. O/n Houseboat.

Day 15: Alleppey – Kochi
After an hour cruise and breakfast on board from 08.00-09.00 hrs, we disembark from the houseboat and drive towards Kochi (about 75 km / 02 hrs). Upon arriving we’ll check into our hotel and later in the evening enjoy a Motor boat ride through the harbor during sunset from 16.30-18.30 hrs. O/n Hotel.
Day 16: Kochi
After an early breakfast, enjoy a Heritage Walking tour through Fort Kochi.
Tour Description:
This walking tour gives you a glimpse into Cochin’s rich history and heritage, showcasing the mixed Dutch, Portuguese, British and Jewish influences that make the city unique. During the tour, we will visit the old quarter of Fort Kochi, exploring the quaint streets of this city on foot. We will also visit Fort Kochi’s seaside promenade and get a glimpse of daily life in Kochi.
The walk lasts 2 hours and is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. Your walk route will include the following:
- St Francis Church (India’s oldest European Church) built by the Portuguese Franciscan Friars.
- The Chinese Fishing nets that Cochin is famous for
- The Nehru Children’s Park area and the interesting houses that ring the park (Koder House, Tower House, Old Harbour Hotel)
- Fort Immanuel (the bastion of the Portuguese)
- The Dutch Cemetery, which is now managed by the Church of South India
- A brief walk past the seaside beach
- Bishop’s House Road, with its beautiful old-style homes
- The Union Club Building
- Santa Cruz Basilica
We will return to our hotel to relax. Later in the afternoon we take a Rickshaw ride from Fort Kochi to Mattancherry, stopping at Dhobi Ghat en route. On arrival, we visit Mattancherry Palace (closed on Friday’s), the Paradesi Synagogue (closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish Holidays), and a walk through Jew Town.
In the evening we watch the dance drama of Kerala – it is a Kathakali show in a local theatre (approx. 17.00-18.00 hrs and performance from 18.00-19.00 hrs). O/n Hotel.
Day 17: Kochi
After breakfast transfer to Kochi int’l airport to board your return flight.
Day 18: Travel
Return to country of origin.

Terms and Conditions
Alpine Ascents International highly recommends trip cancellation insurance for all programs. Due to the nature and heavy costs of government and operator permits, Alpine Ascents International must adhere to a stringent refund policy. Each deposit, regardless of amount, includes a $300.00 non-refundable registration fee.
Full refunds, less registration fee, will be provided 120 days prior to course start date. 50% refunds, less registration fee, will be provided 90-119 days prior to course start date. No refunds will be provided 89 or fewer days prior to course start date. Trip Cancellation Insurance is highly recommended. This will be the only way to get a refund due to trip interruption or cancellation.
