Everest Base Camp Trek Team 1 reaches Namche Bazaar!

Hi Everyone,

We loaded up in the helicopters at 6:30 this morning and headed direct to Phakding, where we had originally planned to stay last night. The other members joined us after arriving from Kathmandu and the team was reunited! Going direct to Phakding allowed us to jump back on our original schedule. We all enjoyed a long day walking today with a big hill climb up to Namche Bazaar the cultural center of the Khumbu and of the Sherpa. Everyone did great and we are now in the care of our dear friends Sherap and Lakpa Doma of the Panorama Lodge! We are working on a team name!

Everest Base Camp Trek Team 2 Tours Town

Namaste Friends, Family & Loved Ones,

Some of us slept better than others last night, given jet lag after long flights, but we all gathered early this morning for our city tour.

The three UNESCO World Heritage Sites that we visited are some of the highlights of Kathmandu. We started by walking up 365 steep steps to Swayambu, which is a huge Stupa (- a Buddhist monument) that dates back more than 2000 years. This site is also called the Monkey Temple, so named for the dozens of rhesus monkeys hanging out there hoping to snag some food (or a camera) from unwitting humans.

We then crossed town and visited Boudhnath, the largest Buddhist stupa of its kind in the world. We visited a small monastery there, and watched people, many in traditional Tibetan dress, circumambulating the stupa and spinning the prayer wheels that surround it.

Last stop on our tour: Pashupati, which is an important Hindu temple and cremation site along the banks of the Bagmati river. The several new team members in the photo below are Sadhus— Hindu holy men who are ascetics.

We had our gear check this afternoon. Despite the gear strewn all over the hotel garden in the photo below, it all went smoothly and everyone’s gear is now sorted and packed.

Nothing more to do this evening except relax and get to bed early so that we are ready to leave for the airport at 5 am tomorrow for our flight to Lukla.

Thanks for following!

Everest Base Camp Team 2 Arrives in Kathmandu

Namaste Friends, Family & Loved Ones,

The expedition has officially begun, and all Team members have arrived in Kathmandu with all of their bags—no lost luggage!

We met as a group for the first time this afternoon in a conference room in the Old Palace attached to our hotel. We all introduced ourselves and got orientated so we know what to expect once we get to the Khumbu. Everybody seems excited to be here and ready for adventure. After our orientation meeting, we went out to dinner and had an immersion course in traditional Nepali cuisine.

Most of us are jet lagged, so we headed to bed soon after dinner to catch up on sleep and get ready for our early morning city tour tomorrow.

Suberatri (- that’s Nepali for “good night”),

Carole & Vern Tejas
