Volcanoes of Mexico team at basecamp

The team is acclimatizing in style and gearing up for a summit attempt of Orizaba. Stay tuned!

Rest Day

Hola!We slept in today and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast at the El Sueño Hotel in historic downtown Puebla. Late morning the team went on a walking tour of Puebla lead by Arnoldo, which included a visit to the first library in all of the Americas as well as old churches and markets. Afterwards we enjoyed some very authentic tacos and fresh fruit juices on the town square. After lunch we jumped in the van and made our way to Zoapan at 10000’ where we will stay the night in Orizaba Mountain Guides compound and enjoy an elaborate New Year’s Eve dinner. Wishing you all a wonderful end to 2023! ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

The Team climbs La Malinche

Hello! Today our team had a beautiful and successful summit day on La Malinche! We woke up early, had a quick breakfast, and then hit the trail. We spent a full day under blue skies walking up to the 14,500’ summit of Malinche. The trail started from out little cabanas and wove up braided trails through the forest to tree line then continued on rocks and sand to the summit ridge. It snowed a few days ago which made for muddy trails in the forest and snowy/icy conditions near the summit. Our team practiced solid footwork and demonstrated some athleticism to get up and down safely in those challenging conditions. After our 8 hour climb we jumped in the van and headed to the historic center of Puebla where we went for a beautiful dinner of traditional dishes. We are looking forward to our rest day tomorrow!

Volcanoes of Mexico team calls in with an update

The crew leaves Mexico City

Hello!   Today we left our hotel in Roma, Mexico City after a lovely breakfast buffet. We went to the National Museum of Anthropology and were treated to a very interesting tour lead by Arnoldo, our cultural and logistics guide who is based in Mexico City. We saw ruins, carvings, and sculptures made by Pre-Columbian peoples of Mexico and listened to some captivating stories from Arnoldo. From there we went east to the town of Tlaxcala, where we enjoyed a fabulous lunch of traditional Mexican food and went for a walking tour of the city center, including a church that was built in 1520. Afterwards we continued on to the flanks of La Malinche at 10,000’ where we are now nestled into cabanas that are our base for the next two days. Thanks for reading!

Just a quick note to tell you what a wonderful time I had on the Mexican Volcanoes Expedition. The program was excellent throughout, and exceeded my expectations. Willi is a fine guide and leader, and I would not hesitate to climb with him again.
