Acclimatization on La Malinche

Hi everyone!
Today we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in our cabañas here at 10,000’ on the flanks of La Malinche. We went for an acclimatization hike up to 12,600’ to get a good view of the upper mountain, preview our route for tomorrow, and enjoy the beautiful forests of lower Malinche. Everyone in the crew did great and we are psyched for our Malinche summit day tomorrow! We spent the rest of the afternoon lounging in the sunshine and preparing ourselves for tomorrow. We met a bunch of sweet dogs today, laughed lots on the trail and became even more cohesive as a group in our first mountain endeavor. Thanks for following our journey!

Team Heads to the Mountains!

Hi everyone!  We made it out of the big city and into the mountains! Before leaving Mexico we went to the National Museum of Anthropology, where we went on a very informative and enjoyable tour with our local guide, Arnoldo. We learned all about the pre-Hispanic peoples who lived in the part of Mexico that we are visiting, and how waves of culture have created the Mexico that we know today.

After our tour we left Mexico City and went to Tlaxcala, enjoying views of Popo and Ixta, huge volcanoes along the way. There we enjoyed lunch and a walking tour of the colonial architecture and mural art of the town.  We even walked inside a church that was built in the 1500’s.
Finally we worked our way to the flanks of La Malinche, our first objective for the trip. We are staying in cabañas here at 10,000’ and will go on an acclimatization hike tomorrow to begin preparing our bodies for being up high.

Bienvenidos a Mexico! December 27th Expedition Begins

Bienvenidos a Mexico!
Our team met for the first time in Mexico City, and everyone is very excited to begin our trip on the Mexican Volcanoes! Our crew comes from all over the US, and travels were generally smooth making it down here. We checked our gear and discussed the logistics of the next few days, and we are now prepared to leave the big city and head to the mountains tomorrow. We ate a delicious meal of Cuban-Mexican fusion in our neighborhood of Roma, with lively conversations as we all got to know each other. Spirits are high and we have dispersed to rest well before our adventurous day tomorrow.
Thanks for following our journey!

Volcanoes of Mexico Summits Pico de Orizaba!

Volcanoes of Mexico Prepares for their Summit Attempt

Excellent program, nothing to complain about. Stuart was always willing to listen to the group but make the decisions best for the group overall. We altered the itinerary slightly to optimize our climbs. Roberto had excellent local knowledge of both mountains.
