Sierra Negra and Team Waiting for Wind and Truth

Hello!
Today we had a delicious breakfast at the compound, then drove to Sierra Negra and got in a good acclimation hike up to 15000 ft! We got to learn a bit about the unique telescope at the summit as well. We then drove back for lunch before packing all our gear into hardy vehicles and driving the challenging dirt roads up to Orizaba Base Camp at 14000ft where we will spend the night. Everyone is feeling good with acclimation and excited to try sleeping a bit higher!
We will check back in tomorrow, thanks for following along!

A productive day for Team “Waiting for Wind and Truth”

We have finally settled on a team name: Waiting for Wind and Truth. Today there was a relaxing morning before going on a walking tour of the historic city of Puebla, visiting many sites including the oldest library in the Americas, a huge and beautiful cathedral, and more of the interesting squares in town. We had lunch with a view of the main cathedral and then drove to Orizaba Mountain Guides compound at the base of the mountain. Here we will stay tonight and get to play with a new puppy and eat some delicious food!
We will check back in tomorrow,
Team Waiting for Wind and Truth

Malinche Success!

Hola! The team got up earlier this morning and steadily made our way up La Malinche until we ran out of mountain to climb! Great views in all directions, we were able to see ixta, popo, and our next two objectives: Sierra Negra and Pico de Orizaba. After getting down, we drove to the beautiful city of Puebla where we are having an amazing dinner and getting to try multiple different molé’s that this area is known for. Everyone is in good spirits and enjoying the good weather we’ve had so far! Narrowing in on a team name as well.
I’ll update again tomorrow, thanks for following along!

Acclimation day

Today we had a nice slow morning and breakfast before meeting up with our local guide, Chito, who will climb Malinche with us. We did an acclimation hike up to 12000ft, then enjoyed a relaxed afternoon in the sun. We will have dinner and then take an early night so we can get up earlier tomorrow to climb!
We will check back in tomorrow!

Lots of Learning!

Hello!

Before leaving Mexico city we went to the famous museum of Anthropology, where the group got a guided overview of the first peoples in the Americas and some of the different ccivilizations that have been here since. After that we made our escape from the big city and had lunch at a beautiful hotel in Tlaxcala, another important historical city. Our local cultural guide took everyone on a walking tour of tlaxcala that included the oldest church in the Americas and oldest bull rung in Mexico. Then it was finally time to head for our lodging for the evening: cabana style cabins at the foot of La Malinche, our first objective!
We will continue to keep you updated, thanks for following along!

I had a great time on the expedition. The mountains were beautiful and challenging and the cultural tour was an unexpected extra! The trip plan made sense, giving us a enough time to acclimatize, have a great opportunity to successfully summit the mountains and recover in between.
