Greeting Family and Friends-
Our team woke in the dark this morning to tear down camp, pack for the mules and begin our final leg of the trek to the base camp, Plaza Argentina @ 13,700’.
For our first experience of the day the “arrieros” or muleteers ferried us across an icy Vacas river and we all had a good laugh when one of the mules decided to run away down the valley.
We then spent a beautiful day hiking up the Relinchos valley, with cool temps and light winds, gaining over 3000 feet of elevation in just about six hours.
Upon arrival we were greeted with a nice reception of cheeses and bread and then oriented towards the goals for our time at basecamp over dinner. The dining staff also baked a cake for our climber Sarkis who turned 37 today. We sang happy birthday and enjoyed sharing highlights from our day.
It’s a chilly evening and the team is resting in their tents, excited for tomorrow’s rest day and a second round of showers. Life is good at base camp.
