Peru Salkantay Trek 2018 Begins!

Our team arrived in Cusco yesterday and all gathered for a fine 3 course lunch at the El Mercado hotel. Many of the trekkers are long time friends and others have done many trips with Alpine Ascents already. It is a fun, strong group!

We went out to a lovely restaurant last night and today went on a tour with our local guide Aly to visit the San Pedro market, the Coricancha, one the most important temple in the Inca Empire, as well as the Cathedral Basilica in Plaza de Armas, the main square in Cusco. We saw llamas, Andean harp musicians, fresh meat, fruit and flowers in the market and tried more delicious Peruvian cuisine at lunch. Some folks had alpaca kabobs, others pork and potatoes, I had the veggies with quinoa and trout salad! And yes, there was chocolate nugget for desert!

This afternoon we have free to enjoy this beautiful historic city and tomorrow we will set off early to start our trek!
