The Crew climbs Lava Tower hitting an elevation record for many before passing through the beautiful Senecio groves on the way back to camp at Barranco Wall

Hello, this is John with the Kilimanjaro Crew. Yesterday was a record high point for a number of folks on the climb; not everybody, as we have some folks who have done a number of high climbs before, but a lot of folks got to a new high point elevation and they did so at lunch.

We started off from our Shira Camp and headed off, in sort of a cool breeze and a little bit of mist rising up from down below us, and followed up a big, long ridge during the morning and got to our lunch break and stopped there for, I guess, about an hour or so, let people get their water bottles filled up and get a little bit of a break.

And then we headed up to Lava Tower. And it was funny, ‘cause yesterday Lava Tower was sort of cold and windy at the base, but then by the time a bunch of us climbed up to the summit, it was warm and calm. And we actually stayed up there for probably a good 30-40 minutes just enjoying the warmth and the view of the upper mountain and the breezeless sky.

But eventually we ended up having to head on down to our camp at the base of the Barranco Wall. And I always like this camp because you get to pass through these beautiful groves of giant Senecio, which are sort of a saguaro cactus – looking tree that’s found at this elevational band throughout east Africa.

But folks are in camp and enjoying getting their boots off and there’s going to be some popcorn and hot drinks here for us. And everybody sends their greetings. We’ll give a call tomorrow.
